Spending time with loved ones is incredibly important, even if it is just enjoying their presence. I had always considered silence to be awkward. In group settings, I had always felt the need to fill the silence with conversation. While that necessarily isn’t a bad thing, it can be tiring to always fill the air with noise. Although I have always enjoyed spending time with loved ones as a form of self-care, this particular weekend allowed me to learn another form of spending fulfilling time together.
Recently, I had plans to go to Color Me Mine with friends, which I was really excited about. We had this hangout planned for months, as we were excited to be able to paint on pottery together. However, I hadn’t anticipated having a hard week and my social battery was worn out. Despite this, I knew I would enjoy my time with my friends and I knew I needed time to relax and not do work.
After we had settled down and picked out our items, I was met with a pleasant surprise. We painted in complete silence. We were so immersed into our painting that we had no need for words. Even better, I didn’t feel the pressure to fill in that silence. I was simply able to enjoy the presence of my friends as we all enjoyed a fun activity together. I learned a valuable lesson that day.
Art can be a wonderful way to practice self-care with loved ones.
